We had chinese last night from Panda Express. Which means fortune cookies. Most of which aren’t authentic fortunes, but whatever fortune cookies aren’t authentic chinese food either. This is what mine read:
YOU HAVE A FLAIR FOR ADDING
A FANCIFUL DIMENSION
TO ANY STORY
PANDA EXPRESS ~ PANDA INN
Sounds nice doesn’t it? Just the thing a writer would want to hear… but I am who I am so the word fanciful kept popping out at me like a ballerina in a feathers and fluorescents and wings, batting huge long eyelashes and cooing with pinkies outstretched and in a bad french accent, “Oooooh, how fancy!”
Despite Fanciful’s exuberance I didn’t think it would be too much of a distraction if I posted the fortune to the edge of my computer screen. I used silver foil star stickers just to make it pop… so that my eyes might be drawn to it from time to time… you know as a reminder that a cookie thought I had flair for adding a FANCIFUL DIMENSION to any story.
Being a fan of alternate dimensions but feeling I didn’t know as much about the dimension of Fancy as I’d like, I decided to look it up. Here’s what Mac’s handy little dictionary had to say about Fanciful.
(of a person or their thoughts and ideas) overimaginative and unrealistic : a fanciful story about a pot of gold.
• existing only in the imagination or fancy : the Moon Maiden is one of a number of fanciful lunar inhabitants.
• designed to be exotically ornamental rather than practical : fanciful bonnets.
fancifully |-f(ə)lē| |ˈføns1fəli| adverb
fancifulness |ˈføns1fəlnəs| noun
1 a fanciful story fantastic, far-fetched, unbelievable, extravagant; ridiculous, absurd, preposterous;imaginary, made-up, make-believe, mythical, fabulous; informal tall, hard to swallow. antonymliteral.
2 a fanciful girl imaginative, inventive; whimsical, impractical, dreamy, quixotic; out of touch withreality, in a world of one’s own. antonym down-to-earthl.
3 a fanciful building ornate, exotic, fancy, imaginative, extravagant, fantastic; curious, bizarre, eccentric, unusual. antonym practical.
So… uhm… yeah… as it turns out, Fanciful is not the flamboyant compliment I first took it for, but is in fact simply a colorful way of saying: UNBELIEVABLE.
Can you believe that?
